Docket # 23-cr-00490-SHS – United States v. Robert Menendez – Superseding Indictment # 4
Prosecutors argued that the Democratic Senator from New Jersey misused his position of power to shield his allies from legal scrutiny and enrich his associates, including his wife, by engaging in activities such as meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials and facilitating access to millions of dollars in U.S. military aid for Egypt.
The verdict came after several days of jury deliberations. Upon exiting the courthouse, Menendez and his legal team announced plans to appeal the verdict.
“I have never breached my public trust. I have always served my country as a patriot. I have never, ever acted as a foreign agent,” Menendez stated emphatically.
During the nine-week trial, Menendez chose not to testify in his defense but maintained publicly that his actions were within his duties as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Regarding the gold bars discovered in his New Jersey residence by the FBI, Menendez claimed they belonged to his wife, Nadine Menendez, who faces similar charges. Her trial was postponed due to her recovery from breast cancer surgery, and she has pleaded not guilty.
Menendez now faces potential significant prison time, with sentencing scheduled for October 29, 2024. He was convicted on 16 counts, some of which carry a maximum prison term of 20 years.
This marks Menendez’s second corruption trial; a previous case on unrelated charges in 2017 ended in a mistrial due to a hung jury.
The case is pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York before the Honorable Sidney H. Stein, United States v. Robert Menendez, Docket # 1:23-cr-00490-SHS-1.
