On Thursday, October 12, 2023 a federal grand jury in Manhattan filed a superseding indictment, accusing Senator Bob Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, of engaging in activities as a foreign agent. This new charge accuses Menendez of conspiracy to act as a foreign agent on behalf of Egypt. Menendez stands accused of representing Egypt’s interests, conveying undisclosed information, and performing favors for their government in exchange for bribes.

Menendez previously alleged that former President Donald Trump acted as a foreign agent for Russia. However, Federal prosecutors have now turned the tables, charging Menendez with being a foreign agent for the Egyptian government.
In the original Indictment, filed in September, Menendez and his wife faced bribery-related charges in the Southern District of New York. According to that indictment, more than $480,000 in cash, much of it concealed in envelopes and hidden in various locations, was discovered in their home. They are also accused of accepting a Mercedes and gold bars as bribery payments.
The indictment against Menendez also alleges that, as the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, he provided sensitive information from the U.S. Government to Egypt. Menendez promptly denied these allegations in a statement following the press conference announcing his indictment.
This case is listed under Docket # 1:23-CR-00490-SHS and is currently pending in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan.
